In its most literal sense, Renaissance is a French word meaning "rebirth."
Historically, it refers to the period in Europe (14th–17th century) that marked the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity, characterized by a massive surge in interest in classical learning, art, science, and discovery.
In a modern or general context, a "renaissance" is defined by:

A Revival: A period of new life, vigor, or interest in a particular subject, movement, or culture.

A Shift in Perspective: A time when a community or individual moves away from stagnant "survival" thinking and toward innovation, creativity, and self-actualization.

Recognized by both State and City of Des Moines proclamations, the "Corn Bred Cornbread Renaissance" is a comprehensive summer campaign, where Iowa's Youth are representing and celebrating the best that Iowa has to offer. It's the ultimate flex, where our Kids get to apply all of their skills that they developed through Hip-Hope programming. This initiative is unapologetically corny! It asks and answers the question, "What does Iowa's future look like?" The campaign is designed to promote #oneiowaculture by bridging the gaps between Iowa's urban and rural cultures in food, music, art, fashion, tech, health, careers, and recreation.
The campaign includes Hip-Hope's Summer Breakthrough Program, partnering and marketing at local community events, digital promoting, Corn Bred Cookouts and more. Hip-Hope staff, community mentors, and volunteers support the Youth as they lead with their ARTiculation, innovation, and inspiration.
It all culminates the last full week of July annually (July 20-26, 2026). We call this "Cornbread Fed Week", where the Youth host a series of events and activities where they take ownership over Iowa's contemporary heritage and culture. At it's climax, there is a day of celebration at the historic Riverview Park, July 25, 2026, that includes a live stage, contests, tournaments, exhibits, a job fair and lots and lots of Cornbread!

Rooted in the principle of edutainment, this space integrates a dynamic marketplace within the vendor booths showcasing original youth-led artwork, custom apparel, and handcrafted designs. Live creative activations and immersive visual spaces provide a canvas for young creators to sharpen their artistic currency, reclaim their narratives, and project their authentic voice to the entire city.

The Fashion Section at the Renaissance is a high-style showcase of cultural pride and innovative design, where youth step onto the runway as the ultimate manufacturers of culture. Grounded in edutainment, this section redefines Iowa's definition of "fashion forward" by elevating local streetwear, custom apparel, and wearable art into powerful statements of identity and personal sovereignty. Anchored by the spectacular "Corn Bread Fabulous" Fashion Show, these Hip trend setters and young designers reclaim their narrative in the spotlight, turning the runway into a high-yield creative engine that proves urban youth don't just follow global movements—they dictate them.
